Holiday Travel Planning
When you are making holiday travel plans you want to start your vacation as relaxed as possible. Whether you are travelling to Puglia (and of course, we hope you are) or somewhere else make your journey as stress-free as possible. Prepare in advance, get organised, get going and arrive in ready to begin your vacation.
1 – Booking Onward Transportation
You have booked your flights/train tickets and accommodation. Next on your holiday travel checklist should be onward transportation to your holiday villa or hotel.
If you are travelling in peak season and renting a hire car avoid the big names. Look at more local operators. You should be able to avoid long queues. We recommend LocAuto and Maggiore. When you book make sure you check terms and conditions. Most car hire companies require a credit card to cover the damages deposit. Travel without a credit card and you may have to pay expensive additional insurance. For peace of mind make sure you either have a full excess cover with the car hire company or better still use an insurance provider like carhireexcess.com.
If your holiday travel plans include taking a taxi from the airport or train station to your villa or hotel ask your hosts for recommendations. Airport and Station taxis can be expensive. Getting good recommendations and booking ahead can save ££££s.
2 – Packing
Next on the holiday travel planning checklist, packing. Plan ahead, pack light, pack according to your destination. In Puglia from mid-June to mid-September, you won’t need much more than beachwear, shorts, t-shirts, light pants and tops for evenings out. From April to mid-June and from September onwards. – pack layers, it could be chilly in the evenings. You want to be able to add a layer or peel it off easily.
Staying in one of our owner-managed Puglia Villas? Don’t bring towels, hair-dryers or umbrellas (which you probably won’t need). We provide them. If you are staying somewhere else check with the owners to see what is provided.
3 – Don’t Be Late!
Your holiday travel starts when you close your front door. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get to the airport or train station. There is nothing more stressful than travelling to the airport or station and worrying all the way. Many of the budget airline flights leave early in the morning. Consider staying in an airport hotel the night before, It may not be as expensive as you think. Try Premier Inn at Gatwick, Holiday Inn at Luton and Stansted for example.
4 – Avoid Car Hire Queues
Waiting in line at the car hire desk can be time-consuming and frustrating. You’ve arrived, the sun is shining, you want to get out there and enjoy your holiday. If you are not travelling alone and have checked in baggage don’t all wait for your bags to arrive. Have the lead driver go ahead and be first in the queue at the car hire desk.
5 – Make sure you know where you are going
Part of your holiday travel preparation should include your onward travel arrangements. Once you arrive in your destination country (of course we hope it will be Puglia) make sure you have good onward travel arrangements. Good directions to the holiday villa of your choice are essential whether you are picking up a hire car or taking a taxi.
Make sure your host or hotel have provided you with really good information on how to arrive at your final destination. Sat Nav devices in rental cars often don’t have updated maps. There have been a lot of changes in our part of Puglia to road names recently. Before you leave home make sure you have GPS coordinates as a backup. Check out the route on Google Maps in advance as well. Really good hosts will provide all the information, contact numbers and a backup meeting place just in case.
6 – Know What To Expect
If you have booked a self-catering villa, know what to expect. Most villa owners provide some sort of welcome basket and some offer a pre-arrival shopping service.
Make sure you know what will be provided in advance and you could save valuable time by not having to detour to a supermarket on your way from the airport or train station. If you have booked one of our Puglia villas then you can be sure of a comprehensive welcome basket, enough for the first 24 hours and including a main course cooked by a local chef. Our villa holiday pre-arrival information will tell you what will be in your Welcome Basket, If you need anything extra we will shop for you in advance of your arrival, just let us know what you need.
